The natural habitat of much of Ireland’s western uplands is temperate rainforest, a rich and diverse habitat of trees, shrubs, ferns, mosses, and lichens. Although it has been in decline for millennia, small pockets remain. Temperate rainforests are a rare and internationally significant piece of Ireland’s natural heritage. Also known as oceanic woodland or Atlantic woodland, temperate rainforest is a very special kind of woodland that only grows in a very limited area where climatic conditions are ideal. 

Ireland’s native habitats are more than landscapes; they are life-support systems. Healthy ecosystems provide the clean water we drink, safeguard biodiversity, store carbon, and buffer us from the escalating risks of climate change. We envision these wild spaces woven through a patchwork landscape of blanket bogs, species-rich grasslands, and vibrant human communities. 

The Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project seeks to restore these temperate rainforests, and we need your support. 

Adopt an acre of Ireland’s temperate rainforest and give them a chance to re-establish themselves on the land through planting and natural regeneration.

Adopting an acre enables Hometree to:

• Acquire land and secure it for nature restoration for the long term.

• Manage land partnerships. 

• Survey and understand the land - mapping habitats, species, water, soils and existing ecological value.

• Develop a restoration plan specific to that landscape and its ecology.

• Protect surviving rainforest fragments and remnant native woodland, giving them space to recover and expand.

• Manage herbivore pressure from domestic and wild grazers where it is preventing habitat recovery.

• Plant native trees where needed, using planting to complement rather than replace natural regeneration.

• Restore the wider mosaic of habitats around the woodland – including peatland, wetland, grassland, scrub and riparian habitats.

• Control invasive species and other pressures that prevent native ecosystems from recovering.

• Monitor ecological recovery over time, building knowledge about what works and adapting management accordingly.

• Support research and ecological learning, including partnerships with local communities, ecologists, universities and researchers.

• Care for the land for the long term - so restoration isn't a one-off intervention, but the beginning of decades of recovery.
