Cnocán Bán Site: The Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project

In November, 2022, Hometree launched the Wild Atlantic Rainforest Project. This project seeks to restore thousands of acres of temperate rainforests through three primary strategies: facilitating natural regeneration by removing grazing pressure, fencing off remnant pockets of forests to allow for their expansion, and planting trees where there is a strong ecological rationale to do so.

Cnocán Bán site in Connemara’s Gaeltacht region is the first site purchased for the Wild Atlantic Rainforest project. Natural biome of this land is temperate rainforest and blanket bog. This site has extreme oceanic climate with 3000 mm of rain per year. Cnocán Bán site falls within the Mammturks Special Area of Conservation.

Size: 280 acres
Location: Connemara's Gaeltacht region

Current Condition:
Overgrazed land with only ten native trees remaining. Characterised by a temperate rainforest and blanket bog biome, and an extreme oceanic climate with heavy rainfall.

Vision:
A groundbreaking project requiring collaboration from various partners. The focus will be on controlling domestic and wild herbivores, exploring natural gorge areas, and potentially restoring upland forests of Scots pine.
